B is for Boat! The Fun of Learning the Letter B at the Preparation Centre

On Tuesday and Wednesday, 27–28 October 2026, TK A students at Al Siddiq International took part in a learning activity at the Preparation Centre, focusing on recognising the letter B through the word boat. The activity was designed to introduce letters through simple vocabulary connected to the learning theme of water transportation. Before the main activity began, the teacher warmly welcomed the children as they arrived. The session started with an ice-breaking activity to build enthusiasm and create an enjoyable learning atmosphere. After taking attendance, the teacher invited the children to have a light discussion about different types of water transportation, particularly boats. The teacher then introduced the English word boat as vocabulary related to boats and ships. Next, the children explored the word boat by breaking it down into its individual letters: B-O-A-T. The teacher encouraged them to observe the shape of each letter and identify the letter B as the main focus of the day’s lesson. Through this activity, the children learnt that words are made up of different letters, each with its own shape and sound. After becoming familiar with the letter’s shape, the teacher demonstrated and explained the correct steps for writing the letter B. The children then followed the instructions and practised writing the letter on the worksheets provided. This activity gave them an opportunity to practise hand-eye coordination, develop fine motor skills, and learn to control their hand movements when writing. The learning experience did not stop there. The children were also invited to display their written letters B on the whiteboard, placing them alongside other letters. This enjoyable activity helped them understand how individual letters can be arranged and combined to form a word. It also gave them the opportunity to showcase their work and appreciate their friends’ creations. Through this activity, the children were expected to become more familiar with the shape and sound of the letter B, understand the connection between letters and simple English vocabulary, and begin developing early writing skills. In addition, the activity helped strengthen their concentration, hand-eye coordination, ability to follow instructions, and confidence in completing tasks independently. Learning to recognise letters does not always have to involve books and pencils. By connecting lessons to engaging themes, introducing simple vocabulary, and providing hands-on experiences, children can learn more actively and enjoyably. Through activities at the Preparation Centre, Al Siddiq International continues to support the development of children’s early literacy skills as an important foundation for their next stages of learning.By Inka Amalia, S.Pd
