Exploring Nature Through the Art of Ecoprinting: Project-Based Learning at TK Al Siddiq International
From Monday to Wednesday, 19–21 October 2026, children at TK Al Siddiq International participated in a Project-Based Learning (PjBL) activity focused on ecoprinting, held in the Dining Room and their respective classrooms. The activity introduced children from TK A to TK B to the creative use of natural materials, such as leaves and flowers, to produce beautiful and unique works of art. Through this hands-on experience, the children not only learnt about nature but also had the opportunity to create their own artistic pieces. The ecoprinting project aimed to foster a love for the environment from an early age. The children were encouraged to understand that nature provides a variety of materials that can be used creatively without always relying on artificial products. The activity also helped them recognise the importance of protecting the environment, appreciating the beauty of nature, and using natural resources wisely. Through direct experience, the children were encouraged to develop environmental awareness that they could apply in their daily lives. On the first day, Monday, all the children gathered in the Dining Room to watch an introductory video about ecoprinting using a smartboard. Through the video, they learnt about the concept of ecoprinting, the tools and materials required, and the simple steps involved in the process. After watching the video together, the children returned to their respective classrooms to plan their designs. Using A4 paper featuring a tote bag outline, they expressed their ideas and creativity by designing leaf and flower patterns that would later be transferred onto their tote bags. On the second day, Tuesday, the children began transforming their designs into real works of art. The activity took place in their respective classrooms, with leaves and flowers serving as the main materials. The children arranged the leaves and flowers on their tote bags and gently pounded them to transfer the plants’ natural colours and shapes onto the fabric. This process provided an enjoyable sensory experience while helping to develop hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills, concentration, and patience. Once the printing process was complete, the teachers helped soak the tote bags in an alum solution before hanging them out to dry, ensuring that the finished creations were ready to be displayed. On the third day, Wednesday, the activity continued with a presentation session. Each child had the opportunity to showcase their completed ecoprint tote bag and share their experiences throughout the learning process. They were encouraged to explain the materials they had used, describe the steps involved in making their creations, and talk about the part of the activity they had enjoyed most. Through this session, the children practised expressing their ideas, sharing their experiences, building self-confidence, and appreciating both their own work and that of their friends. The ecoprinting project also provided an opportunity for the children to develop a variety of skills in an integrated way. In addition to enhancing creativity and fine motor skills, the activity encouraged critical thinking as the children observed the different shapes and colours of leaves and flowers. They also learnt to follow a sequence of steps, complete a project from the planning stage to the final presentation, and understand that creating a piece of art requires time, effort, and perseverance. These experiences reflect the principles of project-based learning, which encourage children to explore actively, experiment, and discover new things through real-life experiences. Through this ecoprinting project, TK Al Siddiq International hopes to help children discover the potential of the natural world around them while developing creativity, independence, and environmental awareness. Each tote bag represents a special creation that reflects the ideas, efforts, and imagination of its young designer. More than simply producing works of art, this activity offers a meaningful and enjoyable learning experience that encourages children to continue exploring and appreciating the beauty of nature from an early age.By Inka Amalia, S.Pd
