The Project Based Learning (PJBL) : Art Creations from Recycled Materials

Bekasi, November 2023, The Project Based Learning (PJBL) activity for Al Siddiq International Primary School pupils on this occasion focused on recycling unused or waste paper into paper pulp. This pulp was then transformed into creative art pieces in the form of moulds, such as maps of the Indonesian islands and various animal shapes, which were later painted with watercolours. The activity began on Wednesday, 25 October 2023, with all primary pupils gathering in the Al Siddiq International School courtyard. Each pupil was organised into work groups. Year 1 pupils were instructed to squeeze the paper pulp, collecting the residue in buckets for moulding. Meanwhile, Years 3 and 4 first sketched maps of Indonesian islands on boards, before carrying out the same pulp-squeezing process as the younger pupils. The excitement of this project lay in the fact that it was a first-time experience for many of the pupils. After squeezing the pulp, they moulded it into animal-shaped containers and onto island sketches. The moulds were then left to dry under the sun. A week later, the activity continued as pupils prepared their own watercolours to paint the dried moulds. Year 1 pupils created colourful, playful works of art from the pulp creations, while Years 3 and 4 were tasked with colouring their island boards more systematically. This activity also served as a lesson in recognising land and sea boundaries, as well as different landforms through colours. The final works were later assessed by each class teacher. Internalising Qur’anic Values at Al Siddiq International School

One of the main focuses of Al Siddiq International is the internalisation of Qur’anic values. The school places great emphasis on Islamic religious education within its daily curriculum, with the aim of shaping pupils who not only understand but also practise the teachings of the Qur’an in their everyday lives. The Tahfidz al-Qur’an Programme is one of the school’s hallmarks, in which pupils are gradually guided to memorise the Qur’an under the supervision of experienced teachers. This programme is not solely about strengthening memorisation skills, but also about deepening pupils’ understanding of the meanings of the Qur’an. The learning process is designed so that pupils are able to apply Islamic teachings in their daily conduct, both at school and at home. By instilling Qur’anic values from an early age, Al Siddiq International provides its pupils with a strong spiritual foundation that is expected to serve as a guiding principle throughout their lives. Religious education here is not merely theoretical; it encourages pupils to grow into individuals of noble character and virtuous conduct.

Kindergarten Pupils Learn to Shop at the Supermarket

Bekasi – November 2023, Another exciting field activity was organised for our friends, the pupils of Al Siddiq International Kindergarten. In the first week of November, they visited a nearby supermarket to learn how to shop independently. The chosen destination was Tip Top Supermarket, Pondok Gede, Bekasi. This experience was eagerly anticipated by the pupils, who could hardly wait to set off for the location by taking public transport (angkot). Through this journey, they were also taught how to hail a public minibus, sit properly and calmly during the ride, and even pay their own fare. Upon arrival, the pupils, accompanied by the headteacher and teachers, lined up to enter the supermarket and took baskets to place the items they would purchase. Beforehand, they had been given guidance on choosing safe and healthy food and drinks. They were then divided into groups, with each group supervised by teachers. The next stage, after selecting their items, was heading to the cashier to make payment. Using the money they had brought, the children practised paying for their chosen goods themselves. Alhamdulillah, the transactions went smoothly, and the pupils were delighted to bring home their favourite food and drinks after completing the process independently. The return journey was once again made by angkot. Back at school, the pupils sat neatly in class to enjoy the items they had bought. This valuable learning experience left a lasting impression, as the children gained practical knowledge on paying for public transport, proper behaviour while travelling, choosing useful items, making payments at the cashier, and practising discipline while shopping. Good job, kids! [Red]By Esty Indraswariani, S.Sos

Let’s Make Our Own Dictionary!

Bekasi, October 2023, Friends, have you ever created your own piece of writing? Do you enjoy writing short stories, making illustrations, or even drawing your own comics? For those who love writing or drawing, this is certainly nothing new. But for those who are not used to doing such things, it may not be that easy, right? Do you know why it is so important for us to write, even though it may be difficult? Because by writing, we are recording a piece of history—whether it is something we ourselves have experienced or something that has happened to others. Such writing may prove valuable one day if someone needs information about that event. That is why, let’s start creating our own “historical record”, this time in the form of an English dictionary! You may wonder: isn’t a dictionary different from a piece of writing? True, it is not exactly the same. However, in a dictionary you can still express yourself through writing—explaining the meaning of a word. The benefit is not only for yourself but also for others who may find it useful. This is exactly what Year 3 and Year 4 pupils of Al Siddiq International Primary School have done. Their Project Based Learning (PBL) task this time was to create their very own student-version English dictionary. They were free to add pictures, colours, notes, and decorations to make their dictionaries more attractive. The vocabulary chosen for the dictionaries was simple and easy to understand, with words that are often used in beginner English conversations. Designed in the form of a small notebook, the dictionary is easy to carry around. The final products were then presented in front of their teachers for assessment. Through this project, pupils not only learned new English vocabulary and created a product of their own, but also gained confidence by explaining the process and contents of their work. Congratulations to our Year 3 and Year 4 pupils—may your collection of creative works continue to grow. Your own dictionary is your own history![Red]By Esty Indraswariani, S.Sos

Animalium BRIN: The First Educational Field Trip of Al Siddiq Primary School

Bekasi – September 2023 One of the extracurricular activities organised by Al Siddiq International Primary School (SD Al Siddiq) is the Educational Field Trip (EFT). For the first semester, the school’s inaugural EFT was a visit to Animalium (Animal Science Centre), a research facility owned by the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN). Animalium, which has been open to the public since March 2023, was designed as a destination for animal science tourism. It enables visitors to explore and learn about animal life ecosystems, thereby helping to foster ecological awareness and intelligence among the nation’s future generations. With the dual purpose of learning and leisure, Al Siddiq pupils visited Animalium to directly observe various species of animals, their anatomy and characteristics, natural and artificial habitats, as well as to study animal conservation. The field trip, held on Tuesday (26/9), also served as a refreshing activity for pupils after completing their Mid-Semester Summative Assessments (STS) the previous week. What impressions did the pupils gain from this EFT? They expressed great joy and excitement at learning in a new environment. The opportunity to see a variety of animals they had never encountered before was a memorable experience. Alhamdulillah, the trip ran smoothly, and everyone returned safely and in good health. See you on the next trip and adventure! [Red]By Esty Indraswariani, S.Sos

Tempeh Making

Tempe is known as a traditional food native to Indonesia. It has existed since the 16th century on the island of Java, and Indonesia is now one of the largest tempe producers in the world. Beyond being a side dish to rice, tempe is also processed into various snacks and regional delicacies that serve as local souvenirs. In implementing the Project-Based Learning (PJBL) model, the projects for secondary school students are naturally more complex than those for primary school students. The first project for Al Siddiq International Junior High School students this semester was to make their own tempe — from preparing the ingredients to managing and tasting the final product. Given tempe’s close connection to everyday Indonesian life, many were curious: how exactly is tempe made? It turned out to be less complicated than expected! This was the experience of the Al Siddiq International students. From washing the soybeans, boiling, drying, and storing them in containers for fermentation, each group carried out the process independently. Why the title “Tempe à la Al Siddiq”? Is there any significant difference between ordinary tempe and the one made by the Year 7 students of Al Siddiq International? As it turns out, yes, there is. The students’ version of tempe included flowers as an additional ingredient besides soybeans. Butterfly pea flowers, roses, moringa leaves, and nori (seaweed) were used as extra natural additives. So, how did it turn out? Alhamdulillah, the process went smoothly and successfully. The resulting tempe had a more fragrant aroma and a distinct taste thanks to the combination of nori and moringa leaves. At the end of the PJBL project, the students were required to present their process and results. Through this experience, it is hoped that one day the students will be able to develop tempe into a unique, innovative, and marketable product.By Esty Indraswariani, S.Sos

The Excitement of Project Based Learning “Part of My Body”

Bekasi, September 2023 One of the learning models implemented at Al Siddiq International School is Project Based Learning (PBL). This model uses projects or activities as a medium for learning in order to achieve competencies in attitude, knowledge, and skills for pupils. Here, the teacher acts as a facilitator by providing case studies that are to be solved through projects. In this approach, PBL emphasises pupils’ active participation and collaboration, usually carried out in groups. During the first term, Al Siddiq International School scheduled two PBL programmes for both primary and secondary levels. As this was the pupils’ first PBL experience, it was naturally an engaging one, with pupils showing great enthusiasm. The projects assigned varied according to year groups: Primary Years 1, 3, and 4, as well as Secondary Year 7. For instance, the Year 1 pupils carried out a project themed “Part of My Body”. Each group was given a set of body part illustrations to cut out, paste, and colour on a large sheet of card. These were then labelled in both English and Arabic. Group task allocation was left to the pupils themselves, enabling them to practise group management. Every pupil was required to be actively involved in the process. The teacher then guided pupils in preparing to present their PBL outcomes. During these presentations, pupils were trained to explain their group’s work, using both foreign languages in their delivery. Through this model of learning, pupils gained a variety of skills and experiences, including teamwork, patience, neatness, presentation design, accuracy in writing in two languages, confidence in speaking before the class, unity during group presentations, as well as clarity of expression that could be understood by others. This very first PBL was undoubtedly a valuable lesson in the learning process. What pupils received from their teachers and from reading books could be transformed into a project, allowing them to absorb knowledge more effectively. [Red.]
