The Project Based Learning (PJBL) : Art Creations from Recycled Materials

Bekasi, November 2023, The Project Based Learning (PJBL) activity for Al Siddiq International Primary School pupils on this occasion focused on recycling unused or waste paper into paper pulp. This pulp was then transformed into creative art pieces in the form of moulds, such as maps of the Indonesian islands and various animal shapes, which were later painted with watercolours.

The activity began on Wednesday, 25 October 2023, with all primary pupils gathering in the Al Siddiq International School courtyard. Each pupil was organised into work groups. Year 1 pupils were instructed to squeeze the paper pulp, collecting the residue in buckets for moulding. Meanwhile, Years 3 and 4 first sketched maps of Indonesian islands on boards, before carrying out the same pulp-squeezing process as the younger pupils.

The excitement of this project lay in the fact that it was a first-time experience for many of the pupils. After squeezing the pulp, they moulded it into animal-shaped containers and onto island sketches. The moulds were then left to dry under the sun.

A week later, the activity continued as pupils prepared their own watercolours to paint the dried moulds. Year 1 pupils created colourful, playful works of art from the pulp creations, while Years 3 and 4 were tasked with colouring their island boards more systematically. This activity also served as a lesson in recognising land and sea boundaries, as well as different landforms through colours.

The final works were later assessed by each class teacher.
