On Wednesday, 5 August 2026, the children of TK A Al Siddiq took part in a learning activity at the Preparation Centre, focusing on recognising the numerals 1 and 2. The activity was designed to introduce children to basic number concepts in a simple, enjoyable way that was appropriate for their stage of development. The children were not only introduced to the shapes of the numerals, but were also encouraged to understand the relationship between each numeral and the corresponding quantity of concrete objects: one and two.
The activity began with the children listening to a story from the Pippa and Pop book, in line with the current theme, “My Body”. Through the story, the children were encouraged to learn and expand their simple English vocabulary. In addition to developing their listening skills, the storytelling session provided an opportunity for the children to become familiar with English vocabulary in an enjoyable learning environment.
After the storytelling session, the lesson continued with an introduction to the numerals 1 and 2. The teacher showed the children the shapes of the numerals and explained how to write them using simple steps. The children then practised following the example demonstrated by the teacher at the front of the classroom. This activity aimed to help the children recognise the shapes of the numerals while also developing hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills through writing practice.
Next, the children were given worksheets related to the numbers 1 and 2. They were asked to complete the activities according to the instructions provided. During the activity, the teacher worked with the children individually, providing guidance and observing their progress directly. The children were given opportunities to count concrete objects and identify the corresponding quantity, either one or two objects.
Counting concrete objects is important because young children are still developing their understanding of number concepts through real-life experiences. By seeing, holding, and counting objects directly, children can understand that the numeral 1 represents one object, while the numeral 2 represents two objects. This also enabled the teacher to assess how well each child was able to connect a numeral with its corresponding quantity.
Through this activity, the children were expected to recognise the numerals 1 and 2, write them with greater confidence, and count concrete objects in quantities of one and two. In addition to developing early numeracy skills, the activity also supported language development, particularly through the introduction of English vocabulary from the Pippa and Pop story. The gradual, interactive, and individualised approach allowed each child to learn according to their own ability and pace.
The Preparation Centre activity that day became a meaningful learning experience for the children of TK A Al Siddiq. From listening to a story and learning English vocabulary to practising numeral writing and counting concrete objects, the children had opportunities to learn through a variety of active and enjoyable experiences. Through this approach, number concepts that may initially seem abstract could be introduced through real-life activities that are familiar and meaningful to young children.
