Bekasi, 16 October 2026 — English language proficiency is a key competency for young people as they navigate digital transformation and global competition. As technological advances continue to expand access to information and cross-border collaboration, mastering English involves more than understanding grammar and answering questions. It also requires the ability to communicate effectively, understand context, and express ideas with confidence.
Recognising the importance of these skills, SMP Al-Siddiq International welcomed Mrs Emma, an English-speaking native speaker, for a special learning session on Friday, 16 October 2026. The activity formed part of the school’s bilingual programme, which is held every semester to strengthen students’ English communication skills through authentic learning experiences.
Creating an Authentic Language-Learning Experience
Mrs Emma’s presence gave students the opportunity to interact directly with a speaker from a different linguistic and cultural background. Through these interactions, students practised pronunciation, intonation, vocabulary selection, and appropriate responses in conversation.
This experience offered valuable educational benefits. Students learnt not only to understand language as a set of rules, but also to use it as a means of sharing information, exchanging ideas, asking questions, and building mutual understanding. They also learnt that effective communication does not always require perfect sentences; it takes the courage to try, the ability to listen, and a willingness to learn from mistakes.
This approach is particularly relevant in modern education, where communication, critical thinking, collaboration, and adaptability are essential twenty-first-century skills.
Contextual Learning Tailored to Each Year Group
The learning sessions were designed around different themes for each year group, ensuring that the material was relevant to students’ experiences and communication needs.
Year 7 students explored the theme “Fashion and Clothing” in their classroom. Through this topic, they practised clothing-related vocabulary, describing appearances, and expressing personal preferences in English.
Year 8 students took part in a session entitled “Travel and Modern Technology” in the Science Laboratory. The topic connected language skills with technological developments and travel experiences, allowing students to explore how English can be used in the context of modern life.
Meanwhile, Year 9 students studied the theme “Exciting Travel” in the Science Laboratory. This topic encouraged them to develop their storytelling skills, share experiences, and express ideas and travel plans in a more structured way.
The use of contextual themes demonstrated how language learning can be integrated with everyday experiences and knowledge from different subject areas. As a result, students had opportunities to use English functionally rather than simply memorising vocabulary.
Throughout the sessions, students showed great enthusiasm. They confidently asked questions, attempted answers, and expressed their ideas in English. Their active participation reflected a supportive learning environment that encouraged engagement and gave students opportunities to develop their communication skills.
Bilingual Education: Preparing Students for the Future
For SMP Al-Siddiq International, the native speaker programme is part of the school’s commitment to providing learning experiences that align with the demands of global education. English proficiency is expected to equip students with the skills to access international sources of knowledge, keep up with developments in science and technology, and participate in an increasingly interconnected academic and professional world.
However, global competence extends beyond language proficiency. Communication skills must be accompanied by strong character, independence, critical thinking, and an open-minded attitude towards differences. For this reason, cross-cultural learning experiences are an important part of preparing students to engage with the global community.
Through its bilingual programme, held every semester, SMP Al-Siddiq International continues to develop communicative, contextual, and practical English learning that meets students’ real-world needs. The session with Mrs Emma was one example of this commitment, positioning students as active participants in their learning and English as a practical skill for connecting with the wider world.
